GLP-1 Users Are Revisiting the Parts of Life They Once Put on Hold
See how GLP-1 users are returning to goals, relationships, fitness, travel, and other life milestones they once put on hold.
GLP-1 medications have dominated health headlines for the better part of two years, mostly for what they do on the scale. For many of the people taking them, though, the bigger change is happening off the scale, in the milestones they had set aside. Weight had done more than affect their health. It had put parts of life on hold, from the clothes they wanted to wear to the relationships they wanted to start.
To understand what people postponed and what they are reclaiming, ZipHealth surveyed 1,014 GLP-1 users about the experiences they delayed, the first milestones they returned to, and what made them feel ready. For many users, weight loss was connected to parts of life they had been waiting to pursue.
Key takeaways
- 84% of GLP-1 users say their weight has caused them to delay at least one major life milestone.
- Buying or wearing the clothes they want is the top milestone GLP-1 users put on hold, with 60% delaying it.
- The average GLP-1 user has postponed their longest-delayed milestone for three years before finally pursuing it. Social events are held off the longest, at four years on average.
- 35% of GLP-1 users still plan to pursue a fitness or athletic goal they have not yet done since starting treatment, the top unclaimed milestone.
- 63% of GLP-1 users credit losing weight, and 60% credit feeling more confident, for feeling ready to pursue what they have postponed.
- 42% of GLP-1 users have pursued their first delayed milestone before losing even 25% of their goal weight.
- 7 in 10 GLP-1 users once felt a life experience they wanted was "not for someone like them" because of their weight.
The milestones GLP-1 users delayed, avoided, or believed weren't for them before losing weight
Before starting treatment, GLP-1 users weight affected which experiences they felt were open to them. Here are the milestones they delayed most, and how long they waited.

Most GLP-1 users delayed at least one milestone
- More than 8 in 10 GLP-1 users (84%) have delayed at least one major life milestone because of their weight.
- Clothing tops the list: 60% put off buying or wearing the clothes they want, followed by a fitness or athletic goal (36%), social events (29%), and dating (25%).
- 7 in 10 (70%) say a life experience they wanted once felt "not for someone like them" because of their weight.
Some milestones waited years
- On average, users postpone their longest-delayed milestone for three years before pursuing it.
- 1 in 3 (33%) have waited three years or more, and 6% have waited a decade or longer.
- Social events are held off the longest, at four years on average.
Gender and generation shaped what people put off
- The clothing gap is widest between genders: 71% of female GLP-1 users delay buying the clothes they want, compared with 47% of male users.
- Among Gen Z GLP-1 users, 36% delay dating or a romantic relationship, three times the rate of baby boomers (12%).
- Gen Z also feels the most left out, with 73% saying an experience felt "not for someone like them," the highest share of any generation.
What GLP-1 users are finally pursuing after feeling healthier or more confident
Feeling healthier and more confident did more than improve daily life; for many GLP-1 users, it reopened the door to plans they had shelved. Respondents shared what they reclaimed first, how quickly they did so, and what still tops their wish list.

Clothing and fitness lead the comeback
- Clothing is the first milestone GLP-1 users reclaimed: 42% name it as the first thing they pursued, and 42% say they have already done it.
- Fitness followed closely, with 24% pursuing it first and 25% saying they have already done it.
- Among users who have delayed buying or wearing the clothes they want, 49% made it the first milestone they reclaimed. The same is true for 47% of those who have delayed a fitness goal, compared with 13% of those who have delayed a career move.
Many acted before the scale moved much
- More than half of GLP-1 users (55%) pursue a postponed milestone within five months of starting treatment.
- More than two-fifths (42%) act before losing 25% of their goal weight, and 18% before losing any weight at all.
- Losing weight (63%) and feeling more confident (60%) are the reasons users most often credit for feeling ready, ahead of feeling physically healthier (45%) and having more energy (39%).
Fitness tops the unfinished wish list
- Fitness leads the still-unclaimed milestones, with 35% planning a fitness or athletic goal they have not attempted since starting treatment, followed by traveling (32%).
- Among Gen Z GLP-1 users, 20% have already pursued dating since starting treatment, compared with 4% of Gen X and none of the baby boomers surveyed.
- Female users are more likely to plan to buy clothes next (57% versus 33% of male users).
For many GLP-1 users, a second chance is bigger than the scale
The survey points to a pattern that weight-loss headlines often miss. For years, many GLP-1 users treated their weight as a reason to wait, holding back from the clothes, the events, the goals, and the relationships they wanted, sometimes because those things simply felt "not for someone like them."
For people considering GLP-1 treatment, these findings also show why weight management can extend beyond changes on the scale. Access to appropriate medical care and ongoing provider support can be an important part of pursuing health goals safely and confidently.
Methodology
We surveyed 1,014 GLP-1 users to understand how modern weight-loss treatments are reshaping the life milestones people once put on hold. The survey examined the experiences respondents had delayed, avoided, or believed weren't for them because of their weight; the first milestones they reclaimed after starting a GLP-1; how quickly and how far along their weight-loss journey they were when they did so; and what they still hope or plan to pursue next.
The average age of respondents was 39. The gender breakdown was 53% women, 47% men, and less than 1% nonbinary or not listed. Millennials made up the largest share of respondents (46%), followed by Gen X (24%), Gen Z (24%), and baby boomers (6%). All respondents had experience with GLP-1 medications for weight management: 59% were currently taking a GLP-1 at the time of the survey, and 41% had previously taken one but no longer did. The survey was conducted online in August 2026.
