Tadalafil Drug Interactions: What To Avoid And Potential Risks
Tadalafil Drug Interactions

Thinking of taking tadalafil to improve your sexual performance? First, it’s important you understand the risks of drug interactions if you regularly take other medications. Some drug combinations can make tadalafil less effective at treating erectile dysfunction, or even cause adverse effects. Here, we explain what drug interactions are, which drugs commonly interact with tadalafil and what you can do to avoid harmful interactions during treatment.

What is tadalafil used for?

Tadalafil is most commonly prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. You may also have heard it being referred to by its brand name, Cialis

Healthcare professionals also prescribe tadalafil for other medical conditions, including pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate).

How does tadalafil work?

Tadalafil belongs to a drug class known as PDE5 inhibitors. In simple terms, it helps relax your blood vessels and increase blood flow. This means that, when you're aroused during sexual activity, more blood can get to your penis, making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection.

What is a drug interaction?

A drug interaction happens when one medication alters the effectiveness or safety of another. It can change how a drug is absorbed, used or leaves your system. In some cases, drug interactions can increase the effects of a medication, which could cause increased side effects. In others, they can reduce a drug's efficacy, making it a less effective treatment.

It isn't just prescription medications that can cause drug interactions — non-prescription drugs, supplements, vitamins, herbal products and even certain foods can interfere with your treatment.

Understanding the risks of drug interactions

Drug interactions carry serious risks. In some cases, taking tadalafil with other medications can cause a dangerous decrease in blood pressure, which can lead to symptoms like dizziness, fainting or even heart-related complications. Some medications can also cause tadalafil to build up in your bloodstream, which can increase the risk of adverse effects such as headaches, facial flushing and back pain.

Another risk is that tadalafil may become less effective. This means you may not experience the full benefit of the drug, which could make it less effective at treating erectile dysfunction.

Common drug interactions with tadalafil

Several types of medication are known to interact with tadalafil, and some can have serious effects. Here are some of the most common ones:

Protease inhibitors

Used to treat HIV or hepatitis C, these medications can increase levels of tadalafil in your bloodstream, which can worsen side effects. You should consult with a doctor before starting on tadalafil if you are on these medications.

Alpha blocker medication

Drugs like doxazosin or tamsulosin, prescribed for high blood pressure or prostate conditions, can cause sudden decreases in blood pressure when taken with tadalafil. You should consult with a doctor before starting on tadalafil if you are on these medications.

Nitrates

Medications used to treat chest pain (angina), such as nitroglycerin or isosorbide, cause your blood pressure to drop. But so does tadalafil, so taking both can cause dangerously low blood pressure, which can lead to dizziness or even a heart attack. You should not take this medication alongside tadalafil.

How to avoid drug interactions when taking tadalafil

You can take the following precautions to avoid any potentially harmful drug interactions:

  • Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you're currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, supplements, vitamins and recreational drugs. Your doctor can advise whether it's safe for you to take tadalafil.
  • Avoid nitrates and alpha-blockers when taking tadalafil, unless you get specific medical advice by your doctor.
  • Don't change your dose of tadalafil or any other medications you're taking without consulting your doctor, as this can increase the risk of interactions.
  • Keep an eye out for symptoms. If you experience side effects like dizziness, chest pain or shortness of breath, seek immediate medical attention.
