Sex music preferences

What kind of music do people prefer during intimacy? This section reveals the top genres and the key characteristics that make certain tracks perfect for setting the mood.

The music on sex playlists balanced between positive and negative emotions, with an average valence of 0.45. Tracks with high valence sound more arousing and positive (happy, cheerful, euphoric), while tracks with low valence sound more negative (sad, depressed, angry). A 0.45 valence measure suggests the music on sex playlists has a diverse range of emotional tones, leaning slightly toward neutral.

The average tempo of 122 BPM meant the songs were moderately fast, common in dance, pop, and upbeat genres. This tempo indicates that the playlists likely contain energetic and rhythmic tracks suitable for activities like dancing or working out. With an energy level of 0.63, these tracks are dynamic and engaging, making them perfect for creating an exciting atmosphere.

Most of the tracks we found on these playlists were about 3 minutes and 37 seconds in duration — long enough to keep things interesting without dragging on. The top genres on these playlists were pop, hip-hop, and rap, indicating a preference for styles that keep the vibe upbeat and engaging.

Top artists and songs for intimacy

Curious about which artists and songs topped the charts in sex playlists? This section covers the most popular choices people have been grooving to during their most intimate moments.

“Super Freaky Girl” by Nicki Minaj was the most popular song on sex playlists, and The Weeknd was most prevalent in “unprotected sex” playlists. This artist, who recently hinted on social media that his upcoming album may be the last under his current persona, was also the most common artist appearing on sex playlists across the board.

The top three songs in sex playlists were:

  1. “Super Freaky Girl” by Nicki Minaj
  2. “The Hills” by The Weeknd
  3. “Often” by The Weeknd

Kanye West appeared the most in playlists with titles containing the keyword “freaky.” A signed controversial vinyl copy of his 2010 album, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” is being auctioned for over $500,000. With a title like that, it’s easy to see why his music might end up on a number of freaky playlists.

Music’s influence on sexual satisfaction and frequency

It may come as no surprise that music has tons of benefits, but can it actually improve your sex life? Let’s see how listening to tunes during sex could make a difference.

People who said they listened to music during sex were generally more satisfied with their sex lives and had sex more often than those who didn’t. In fact, 14% of the music listeners reported having sex very often (several times per week — a frequency enjoyed by just 16% of married American couples, according to another recent study). In comparison, just 12% of those who don’t listen to music during sex said the same. This might not seem like a big difference, but it couldn’t hurt to play a little music if you want a more active sex life!

Listening to music during sex can also help with performance and duration. A significant 68% of people who listen to music during sex say it helps reduce sexual performance anxiety, and 63% say it significantly increases the duration of sex.

Sexual satisfaction levels were also higher among those who listened to music while doing the deed. About 62% of people who said they listen to music during sex reported being satisfied with their sex life, while only 55% of those who don’t listen to music said the same. So, adding a playlist to these romantic moments might just enhance your overall sexual satisfaction, too.

Let’s finish off with a surprising look into how different genres can correlate with sexual experiences and preferences.

People who listened to music during sex were 72% more likely to have had a threesome, with 31% of them having had this experience compared to only 18% of people who said they don’t listen to music during sex. The music listeners were also 34% more likely to have had a one-night stand.

Classical music listeners topped the satisfaction charts, with 77% reporting being satisfied with their sex life. More than 1 in 3 EDM listeners (37%) said they’ve had sex in public, showing their bold and adventurous sides. Those who listen to hip-hop or rap during sex have lasted the longest at an average of 31.5 minutes per sex session, while EDM listeners had the shortest duration at 27.2 minutes.

Those who said they listened to country music during sex were the most likely to have participated in an orgy (22%), and they were also the most likely to say they rarely or never use protection (61%). People who tended to listen to metal during sex were the most likely to have a fetish (72%), while those who listened to reggae were the most likely to cry during sex (38%).
